put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist
To stand firm against evil we need to put on the full armour of God (Eph. 6:13). We start by fastening the “belt of truth”. If the “belt of truth” comes loose we trip over lies, deceit, half-truths and fabrications.
People speak of the truth being stretched, or bent or naked. They face the “moment of truth” with trepidation and hunt for a “kernel of truth” in a sea of lies.
We do well to remind ourselves that “God’s truth is God’s being…The ultimate truth about the universe is that God is the way He is as revealed to us in Jesus Christ. He is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is an endless circulation of unconditional love” (Rowan Williams). As John declares “the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth” (Jn. 1:14).
The universe’s “moment of truth” was the Crucifixion: Jesus’ arms stretched out in love. His head bent in death – a kernel dying to bear the fruit of eternal life (Jn. 12:24-25). The Truth that sets us free!
