The “Apprentice Series”
Do you try hard to be a “good” Christian but feel like you fall short? Do you long to grow spiritually? There is Good News! Following Jesus is about training and growing, not trying yet failing! With the Spirit’s help we can train to be followers (apprentices) of Jesus.
The Apprentice Series enables transformation by:
- Prioritizing “True Narratives”: We are “creatures who live by our stories”. But sometimes the stories we live by are neither true nor helpful. Easy to read chapters help us better understand the “good and beautiful” God that Jesus reveals to us.
- Practicing “Soul Training” Exercises: Each week we follow simple “soul training” exercises (from sleep, to silence to creative forms of prayer) that train and transform our hearts.
- Participating in Community: We learn and grow best in the company of other Christians, so we meet weekly for reflection, discussion, prayer and accountability.
As we give ourselves to this “triangle of transformation” we open ourselves to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit.
Commitment
For a 10-week period you will need to set time each week to:
- Read one chapter of around 20 pages.
- Practice the “Soul training” exercise.
- Attend the small group meeting (about 1 hour).
Cost
R280 covers the use of the book for the duration of the course (the book will need to be returned so that we can use it for others).
If you cannot this please chat to one of the pastoral staff who will, in confidence, make assist with an alternative arrangement.
Date & Time
Wed evenings, starting 05 Feb 2020, 19:00-20:00 (a morning group is a possibility, let us know if you are interested)
About the Apprentice Series:
Author: James Bryan Smith (https://apprenticeinstitute.org)
There are three books in the Apprentice Series:
- The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in love with the God Jesus knows
- The Good and Beautiful Life: Putting on the Character of Christ
- The Good and Beautiful Community: Following the Spirit, Extending Grace, Demonstrating Love.
After working through the first book we hope to encourage groups to follow the other two.
