Minister’s Note – 10 May 2015

Sean_-_Photo_for_front_pgIn my early 20’s I set off to Europe to compete in a series of White Water races. I arrived, somewhat naïvely, with one kayak, one paddle and a backpack. Other teams had a manager, coach, physio, bus, driver, trailer, practice boats and race boats.

Competitors spent the week preceding each event studying every rock and eddy for the fastest line over a 4-8km stretch of river. I needed someone to show me the way. Unfortunately, on the first river in the series (in the French Pyrenees), my chosen guide disappeared leaving me to navigate difficult rapids “blind”. My kayak, paddle and pride emerged seriously dented. Those first few weeks were lonely and a little scary.

However, by the time we reached Austria, some talented French paddlers had befriended me. I had guides – one in front and one behind! They didn’t just show me fast lines; they taught me the moods and character of the river. My confidence and enjoyment grew. Soon I no longer needed their physical presence to hear their voices calling “à droite” (to the right), “à gauche” (to the left).

We all need guides and mentors. That is why Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit as our helper and guide (Jn. 14:16, 26; 16:13). Today we pray for God’s Spirit to renew and empower all who serve as mothers; mentors to their own children or to the children of others.
God Bless, Sean
