I know precisely the extent of your violations,
the enormity of your sins. Appalling!
You bully right-living people, taking bribes right and left and kicking the poor when they’re down.
Justice is a lost cause. Evil is epidemic.[1]
The challenges faced by our courageous Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, have again made headlines. At the recent “Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture” she called on decision-makers to accept scrutiny, warning that “sustainable peace is out of our grasp at the moment.” Many leaders aggressively resist scrutiny because they have much to hide. The lure of wealth has entangled them in deceit, greed and corruption.
The prophet Amos, who spoke God’s word in a time of oppression and injustice, reminds us that no one can resist God’s scrutiny. God sees and, ultimately, justice will prevail.
Judgement, of course, starts with the “House of God” (1 Pet. 4:17). We too are tempted by the lure of wealth. We too are subject to God’s scrutiny. May Jesus’ words in Mark 10:17-31 inspire us to “recalibrate” and seek “treasure in heaven” (21).
It’s my weekend off but it is a privilege for us to welcome Rev. James Massey who will lead our morning services.
