Listen to Him – Lenten Disciplines
On the Sunday before Lent we read God’s command: This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him (Lk. 9:35). In Lent we make a special effort to simplify our lives, eliminating noise and distractions, so that we can listen to Jesus. You may find these guidelines helpful. I also recommend Rev. Trevor Hudson’s Pauses for Lent: 40 Words for 40 Days (if you get the kindle version you’ll be able to use it this Lent). If you’ve been moved by the current drought a water fast may help you to hear Jesus more clearly.
Sunday Worship Series – Good News for the ‘Nobodies’
Each Sunday in Lent we’ll be listening to Jesus voice in the Gospel of Luke. Luke takes special care to show us Jesus concern for the least, the last and the lost. Luke’s Gospel reveals how God delights to give ‘nobodies’[1] a special role in making known Good News of great joy for all people. ‘Nobodies’ like an elderly childless woman, a poor virgin, smelly shepherds and uneducated fisherman are given prominence in God’s upside down Kingdom.
We’ll see how Jesus offers grace and healing to the diseased, the demonised, the disgraced, the destitute and even those sentenced to death.
We’ll draw nearer to Jesus by getting to know His friends. We’ll open the fear and shame of our “shadow selves” to God’s redeeming love. We’ll learn to share God’s love for the least, last and the lost.
