Rain! Beautiful, gentle rain for a drought-ravaged earth. I can’t imagine a better picture of blessing. No wonder the Psalmist leads worship with the words:
“Sing to the Lord with grateful praise;
make music to our God on the harp.
He covers the sky with clouds;
he supplies the earth with rain” (Ps. 147:7-8).
The God who sends rain sends greater gifts too. Isaiah believed a time would come when God would command “Shower, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation may spring up” (45:8). In Jesus, heaven has rained down righteousness. Through him the Kingdom of Heaven has arrived and we are blessed.
No situation is excluded from heaven’s blessing. Heaven even delights to bless those who are “poverty stricken in spiritual things – the simple minded, untalented, the religiously unsophisticated” . Heaven blesses the bereaved. Even those who hunger for justice in a cruel and corrupt world will see God’s blessing!
Today we start a new series, “The Good Life Guaranteed” where we follow the first half of the “Sermon on the Mount” (Mt. 5:1-48). And lesson number one is that the Kingdom of Heaven has embraced us with blessing.
God Bless, Sean
