Minister’s Note
“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (Jn. 10:10).
The Christian life is characterised by a constant awareness that we enjoy the abundance of the treasures of heaven! We testify with the Psalmist “The Lord is my shepherd, I don’t need a thing”. This testimony forces the world to pause and take note.
Musawenkosi Saurombe recently became one of the youngest African women to be awarded a PhD. Her journey has not been easy. Indeed her father sold his car to fund her third year studies. But she says: “I am defined by my African name ‘Musawenkosi’ which means ‘God’s grace’ and indeed my life continues to be a story of God’s Grace. …I am grateful to God for the milestone I have reached …It can only be Him at work in all of this”. [1]
Another article describes shadow minister of Social Development, Bridget Masango’s daily 35km barefoot walk to school in the 1970s. Despite being a brilliant scholar financial hardship meant she missed a whole year of school when she was 13. But she now lives a live of intellectual fullfillment, influence and integrity. “Masango will tell you she did not do it alone. It was God – God and the kindness of countless strangers who got her where she is today” [2].
Abundant life sometimes overlaps with the common understanding of ‘success’ (as above), but it is always overwhelmed by God’s grace.
