Minister’s Note 11 June 2017

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (Gen. 1:1–2, ESV).

Scripture opens with God creating light, order, beauty and harmony. Politically and meteorologically our nation has suffered darkness, disorder, disruption and discord. Lives have been lost, homes destroyed and people grieve.

As people of faith we instinctively turn to scripture for words of hope. By God’s grace we don’t need to go further than the first sentence! There it is affirmed that God “is on the side of order, that God is the great, cosmic artist who combats chaos and nothingness, fights disorder in favor of design. …In times of chaos in your life, when your somethingness is in danger of being overswept by the nothingness, imagine this father/mother of a God, bending over your world, like … “a Mammy bending over her baby,” birthing, forming, caressing you with the joy of a great, cosmic artist. “He’s got the whole world in his hands.[1]

May those overwhelmed by chaos and loss experience God’s restoring and recreating grace, for
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble” (Ps 46:1)

God Bless,
