“do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known” (Mt. 10:26)
On May 18th the South Africa Council of Churches (SACC) released findings of their “Unburdening Panel”. The panel had been set up in April 2016 “to hear from people who had either been pressured to participate in corrupt wrong doing or had witnessed such”[1]
Many who came forward were fearful saying “if my story is told, “THEY” will know that it came from me, and my life and that of my family would be in danger”.
Jesus warned that those who follow his example and speak out for truth and justice will face opposition and even danger (e.g. Mt 10:24ff). At a recent time of “Theological Reflection” we learned that our own Presiding Bishop, Ziphozihle Siwa (who as President of the SACC chaired the Unburdening Panel) has himself faced opposition.
I therefore sent him an email promising that the people of DMC would pray for him. He replied saying “Surely something new is being born by God’s grace. I do know that you are not expecting a reply, but want you to know that your prayers are much appreciated at such a time as this – a time of great need for obedient Christian witness for common good. I will also pray for you and your witness as the people of Durbanville and Cape Gateway Circuit.”
Our Nation faces grave challenges but God has not abandoned us. There are many in the Church who work courageously for justice. Let us be the brothers and sisters in prayer, word and action.
God Bless,
Sean
