The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15)
19 years ago I was browsing in a Christian bookshop. I prayed “Lord is there something here that will be beneficial to me?” In one of those rare moments of sudden clarity I was directed to a “coffee table” type book. As a post-graduate student I was sure I could handle weightier material, so I ignored it but, just before leaving the shop I thought I’d better glance at it. The book opened on these words: “You are not your own; you were bought at a price” (1 Cor. 6:19b-20a). In one of those rare moments of alarming clarity God spoke. Words this true are terrifying, comforting and exhilarating all at the same time!
In Sunday’s service (20 Jan 2018), through the Covenant Prayer, we affirm the truth that we belong to God and recommit to this way of life. The starting point, however, is not what we hand over (our lives), but what we’re invited to receive -the Kingdom of God. My mortal life in exchange for God’s eternal Kingdom of beauty, love and joy? – a bargain at the price!
