We long for “friendship” with God as a deer longs for streams of water (Ps. 42:1). But human friendships are also vital to our wellbeing. That is why our “prayer book” (the Psalms) has so many prayers for those who feel betrayed, let down or “friendless”. For example:
My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;
my neighbours stay far away (Ps 38:11).
and
Even my close friend,
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
has turned against me (Ps 41:9).
The “famous” friend we learn from today, Elijah, complained to God “I am the only one left“. As far as he was concerned, he was the last believer left; he had no friends. God lead him to an even lonelier place. There, in solitude, his friendship with God was powerfully renewed. He also discovered that God had not only reserved 7000 faithful worshipers (potential friends) but God had also set aside a close companion, Elisha, who would never leave his side! Friendship with God can sometimes lead us to lonely, challenging places. But by God’s grace we are never alone. God’s friends are closer than we think.
