“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Ps. 27:1).

I love Psalm 27! That first verse is a wonderful expression of trust. A precious reminder of the kind of life God invites us into.

But it’s not the first verse that draws me to Psalm 27. In fact, the first verse has me thinking: “My faith falls short! David sounds so confident. How did he get like that?” But reading a little further I see he wasn’t so different from the rest of us. He prays “Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me…Do not hide your face from me (Ps 27:7–9). It’s an urgent, desperate plea from one who feels vulnerable.

We are vulnerable, mortal beings who live in an unpredictable world. But Jesus invites us into the “strong and unshakeable kingdom of God”[1]. When we call out to God in times of trouble, we discover that God is real; the Lord is indeed the stronghold of our lives.

God Bless,

Sean
