It is not surprising that in our journey of faith there
are times when we have questions for God, and it is
appropriate to ask God questions. I believe that we
do receive answers for all our questions. However,
sometimes the answers to our questions are unexpected.
Similar to what God did with Job, in answering
our questions, God creates an opportunity
to reorient us within the larger awareness of God’s
good creation. Humanity is reminded that we are
not the centre of the universe and our knowing and
power are limited. God is the creator of the universe
whose wisdom and power far exceed anything
the human mind can grasp.
However, God listens to us in spite of our relative
smallness. Why God responds even to our indignation
draws us into the mystery of God’s desire for
relationship with us. What might this say about each
and every human’s importance to God? The same
question is asked by the Psalmist where he says:
“What are human beings, that you think of them;
mere mortals, that you care for them?” (Psalm 8: 4).
Whilst God’s sovereign love extends to the whole of
creation, the dignity and esteem of humans in the
eyes of God despite their relative smallness, is to be
celebrated. “We are God’s masterpiece. He has
created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the
good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians
2: 10).
