The saying “the darkest hour is before dawn”,
speaks volumes of encouragement to people, as
we sometimes face problems and challenges that
seem hopeless or that only appear to have negative
consequences. It reminds us that when things
seem hopeless, just when you feel like there’s no
way out, no solution to a problem, that’s when the
dawn comes and something positive and unexpected
happens that shows us that there is a way
out.
Sometimes we can look back and see why challenging
things happened to us, but this is not always
the case. As the story of Job whose life appeared
to be in the middle of the night, with open-ended
questions, comes to an end, Job has learnt that he
is not the centre of the universe, but he does have
a place and a role to play in the universe. Like Job,
we see that when the dark night is over, the sun always
rises.
The end of Job is a reminder to anyone who is suffering,
and to all of us who will one day suffer, that
as bad as things may get, as low as we may feel,
one day all shall be well again because God is
compassionate. With God there is hope. Restoration
is always God’s way, and that is the very root
and foundation of our faith.
