God is full of surprises. When Zechariah and Elizabeth,
the parents of John the Baptizer, had given
up on having a child as they had advanced in
age, God surprised them beautifully with a son
whom God had anointed to prepare the way for
Jesus. God did immeasurably more than they
asked or imagined, according to his power that is
at work within us (Ephesians 3: 20).
Zechariah’s response to this blessing is a beautiful
song of prophecy in which he offers praise for
God’s mercy and casts a hopeful vision for his own
child, pronouncing a blessing to his new-born son
that would set the tone for his life and ministry.
There is power in the words that we speak to anyone,
especially to our young ones as we lay the
foundation for their spiritual homes. There are people
in our lives who have laid a foundation of faith
for us. They blessed us, spoke words and took actions
that laid the foundation for our lives.
Indeed “life and death are in the power of the
tongue” (Proverbs 18: 21). I believe that our prayers
will have more power and a greater anointing
when our everyday life is filled with words that uplift
and bring grace to others. May we bless others with
words and acts of love, hope and mercy. May our
words and actions strengthen and guide us all into
the way of peace, guiding us all home.
