We long for Friday
Boarding school is a tough place. I clearly remember my
Mom and Dad dropping me off on the first day of high
school, a new little boy in a place crawling with intimidating
big boys and teachers. Four of us found ourselves in a
dorm room with chipboard cupboards and hospital-like
beds, in a building with long passages with shiny floors –
our home for the next 5 years. Especially in the early
years, there were many nights when I would lie awake on
that bed, homesick for family and home comforts, and
feeling very vulnerable in a place where you always had
to be on your guard.
But Friday would come. After school, I would head off to
the shopping centre across the road (we were only allowed
to go there on Fridays), buy myself a Fanta Grape,
and wait for the bus. As it rounded the corner, we would
all rush aboard, and it would make its way slowly up the
mountain passes to Sabie. My Mom would be waiting
outside the Grand Tea Room, and I would have a weekend
at home, with family, homecooked food (!) and my
own room.
Aren’t we all living in a broken world, feeling homesick for
a different place, where God’s kingdom, and His love
and grace and joy are experienced all the time? As we
wait for the coming of our Saviour, we do know Him and
His touch on our lives, but we also know in our hearts that
we are not yet at home. It’s as if we are living in the
week, waiting for Friday.
May you know that Friday will come, for us and our world.
Know that is our Lord’s heart too: He also wants us to
come home to Him, where we belong. But as we wait,
we also need to ask ourselves – what can I do to make it
a little more like Friday for those around me?
