The story of the call of the fishermen as the first disciples
of Jesus has a beautiful message for us who
are called to be disciples of Christ today. It tells us
what God can do in us and through us when we
simply make ourselves available. It challenges us to
think of what is important to us, what risks we are
prepared to take moving out of our comfort zone
into uncharted waters for the sake of Jesus Christ,
whom we have chosen to learn from how to live life
as his disciples.
This story is a call to the Church to move beyond
the familiar, to finding new ways of being the
Church in a complex world, with Jesus Christ being
the defining reality that helps congregations not to
lose their way, but to be the beacon of hope and
healing in the community.
The miracle in this story is not in what these fishermen
gave up, but rather in how the power of God,
present in Jesus Christ, could get them to walk
away from their fishing business, from everything
that had defined them, and to assume a new purpose
for their lives: serving Jesus Christ. There is no
power in a church that wants to change the world
without first being changed by Christ. The God who
loves us and has called us is working even now to
make us a people who are capable of following
Jesus and are not selective in the areas in which we
imitate Christ.
May God grant us the grace to be true to our calling
as disciples of Jesus Christ.
