When we hear the word “enemies,” our minds
might run to the terrorists or to the people who
break into our homes and point guns at us, demanding
what we have worked hard for. That is
true enough. But when you think of loving your enemies,
as Jesus teaches us, we need to think closer
to home and consider people we encounter on a
regular basis. It could be your biggest critic who is
least helpful when it comes to resolving his or her
criticisms, the one who will always find a way to
blame you, the one who never takes your feelings
into account, the one who is prejudiced against
you. Those are the people Jesus is telling us are the
beneficiaries of our love, our prayers, and our kindness.
We have freely received the immeasurable love of
God in Christ. Now, God puts you and me into this
world as recipients of this immeasurable love to express
it to all, irrespective of who they are. Christ’s
love is what motivates the follower of Christ to do
the difficult things – like pray for the people who hurt
or make them angry, forgive someone even though
they haven’t asked for forgiveness and will never
meet your standard of reparation.
In every one of our encounters in life there is an opportunity
for Christ to do unbelievable things
through us. May Jesus’ unfailing love equip, enable,
and empower us to love beyond measure.
