MINISTER’S NOTE 3 APRIL 2022
As Holy Week approaches and the passion and
death of Jesus lie immediately ahead, we also
have a glimpse of those who accompany Jesus on
his journey to the cross. One of those people is Mary
who publicly and extravagantly worshiped Jesus,
thereby starting a controversy. This is not surprising
as I believe that missional churches that are serious
about discipleship often struggle with the tension
between money spent in beautiful acts of worship
and money spent on behalf of the poor.
We are invited to reflect on the attitudes surrounding
an extravagant gift of worship that may provoke
suspicion about motives. This will lead us to
reflect on Jesus who provides a blessed abundance.
Jesus is the gift of God who is sent into a
world that did not request him, a world that lives by
a mind-set of scarcity, rather than a mind-set of
abundance. Yet Jesus acts entirely for its benefit.
As people of faith, we are called to pour out the
richness of what is within to more fully worship God.
We cannot hide pieces of ourselves or grasp onto
expectations that distract from what God created
and creates within us. We are free to bring our
whole selves as a living testimony to who God has
made and makes us to be, both what we label as
good and that which we hide from the world. May
God grant us the grace to embody our faith in Jesus
Christ and be shameless about it.
