With the great celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, we’ve
recently had, I wonder what difference has the resurrection
made in you?
Today we are invited to recognise resurrection in our own
lives, where it happens in the small details of the ordinary
circumstances of our lives.
John sets the third appearance of Jesus to his disciples
within ordinary circumstances, when the disciples have
returned to their old routines of fishing. After fishing for
the whole night, they caught nothing. It is not unusual for
us to do our best but still come up empty. It is during
those times that we come to the limits of our own selfsufficiency.
Our resurrection experience is about Jesus showing himself
to us in the darkness of our lives. The darkness is the
context from which new life arises and the circumstances
in which Jesus will show himself. It was during this appearance
that Jesus drew Peter from his past, forgave and
restored him, thus freeing Peter to become himself and to
be more fully alive.
When the world is in chaos it can feel impossible to find
strength and courage to move forward.
However, with the presence of the Holy Spirit and the
help of loving friends and family, we will discover that we
really can rise again. When we do discover resurrection,
we discover that we have a future, our life has been
guaranteed by Christ’s life, and he has shown himself to
us.
