Have you ever known anyone with authority issues?
The chief priests and elders take issue with Jesus’ authority.
The two sons challenge their father’s authority.
They’re not the only ones with authority issues. We
all have authority issues.
More often than not we misunderstand authority to
be based on credentials, status, or the position held
in relation to another. This assumes that authority is
given to some by their circumstances. However,
there is no one without authority. It is within us, an
interior God-given quality, not an external circumstance.
God shares his authority with us and authorizes
us to act in this world with his authority that is
unique to our lives, through the gifts he has given
each one of us. This authority is visible in the love,
compassion and gentleness we extend to one another.
The people who hold authority for you expand
your world and bring forth life and gifts in yourself
that you never knew were there.
I invite you to ponder these questions: What is the
authority God has given you? What gifts, what divine
attributes, has God given you? Are you living
from that authority and sharing those gifts?
May God grant you the grace to embrace the authority
he has given you.
