PREACHER’S NOTE 28 JANUARY 2024
In the last few months, I’ve watched our next-door neighbours
put their house up for sale, an interested family
come and look a couple of times, sign an offer, and purchase
it. Then there was packing up, moving out, moving
in and unpacking. Before long, a construction site started
next door! Banging and angle grinding, all day. Deliveries
and installation of all sorts of new things – blinds secure
enough to shut up an electronics shop for the night in a
rough neighbourhood, enough glass enclosure to let
someone braai in a monsoon, and enough solar panels to
power a small city. A couple of months in, there’s a very
different house next to us now!
All that got me thinking. Renovations to a house depend
a whole lot on the owner, and the plans they have for
living in it. I think there are parallels to when you invite
God into your life, and ask Him to live in your heart. It’s His
house now, and He will have plans to renovate. Some we
understand – He helps us get rid of some of the really silly
things we’re doing. Some we love – He often blesses us so
that we can live more freely, with more joy. But sometimes,
what He’s doing just doesn’t make sense. What are
you doing? You can’t change that – that’s always been
how I do things!

How do we trust Him when He starts to renovate those
things that are deep, precious, and a little too close to
home? How do we get to know that He knows what He’s
doing, and He’s got plans far better than we have, even
if we don’t understand them now?
