PREACHER’S NOTE 14 DECEMBER 2025
Every year in September, we make our way north to the West
Coast National Park, when they open the top section for the
flowers. It is always a day of slow driving and walking with wideeyed
wonder, to see a normally bland landscape now
splashed with colour as fields of flowers stretch as far as the eye
can see.
I always find myself wondering where all these flowers come
from? I think of all those seeds, lying in the ground, waiting for
the right conditions. Enduring searing heat and icy cold, months
of no moisture, waiting, just below the surface. Then the rains
come, the sun warms the ground just enough, and flowers
bloom everywhere, overnight, transforming the landscape.
Our reading this week comes from Chapter 35 of the book of
Isaiah, where the author uses these scenes of flowers in the
desert to illustrate to us the blossoming of the kingdom of God.
He paints a picture of beauty to come: “even the wilderness
and desert will rejoice in those days; the desert will blossom with
flowers. Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers and singing
and joy.”
The world is often bland, weary, a place where hopes are
dashed, and people are sceptical. But the seeds of the kingdom
are everywhere, waiting. When the conditions are right,
the kingdom blooms, even in the most unexpected places.
Let’s sow kingdom seeds into people’s lives in the places we
live, in the places we work – God says He is working to make the
conditions right for life to be as beautiful as fields of wild flowers.
Let’s live with joy in our heart that we can share with others.
Let’s not get desperate, even when things look bleak. Beautiful
things are coming – the Great Artist is preparing his canvas, and
readying His paintbrush.
